The Strata works were inspired by a looking closely at selected edges and shapes in my Trash Tower sculptures and rendering these forms as shifting and over-lapping planes. They are layered with fragments of maps, washi paper, and newspapers. Sumi ink, gesso and other pigments are brushed over the surfaces melding these layers of cultural debris. Sumi ink and surfaces of varied textures and absorbency allow me to revel in the guided accident. The horizontal format references my interest in byobu (Japanese screens) and encourages visual travel across the surfaces and through unexpected and mysterious spaces.
